basketball drills for beginnersWelcome to this basketball drills for beginners page. If you are a beginner in the game of basketball and are not sure where to start the first thing i can tell you is to have fun. this is how to get better at basketball. Everyone has to start some where,my suggestion is to start with some basic passing dribbling and shooting drills. These drills are the basics to all basketball fundamentals. I have listed step by step basketball drills for beginners.

First Basketball Drill for Beginners

Start with your strong hand, that is weather your right handed or left handed, start with that hand and only that hand. You can’t use 2 hands or that would be called double dribble and that’s against the rules. Dribble with your strong hand standing still, get a feel for the ball try to control the ball in your area close to your body but, not to close. Once you are comfortable with dribbling the ball standing still in your area start moving around dribbling the ball at the same time, walk at first and when your ok with that work your way up to running.

Ok lets say you have got that down and now you want to do basketball drills for beginners.

Now I want you to set up some objects to dribble around, this can be chairs the car in the driveway the dog, whatever you have available. If it’s at school they will have cones or chairs for you to use. When your dribbling with objects in your way you want to make sure you keep your body between the ball and the object because you don’t want the object to get the ball. The object represents a person from the other team you are playing. Remember to keep your body between the ball and the object, also remember to bend your knees and keep an eye on the object and practice, practice, practice the basketball drills for beginners.

Second Basketball Drill for Beginners

You will need a friend to help with this one. Practice dribbling for a little bit then stop and bring the ball up close to your chest then throw the ball to your friend, he will catch it then dribble, stop, bringing the ball to his chest and throw it back. In team sports you will have 4 other players to throw it to, so make sure the person you throw it to is open or the other team might get the ball and that is not the basketball drills for beginners.

Another passing drill you can practice and one that is practiced in team sports is called the weave. The weave takes 3 players, one in the middle, one about 15 feet to his right and one 15 feet to his left, there is no dribbling in this drill and you can’t take more than 2 1/2 steps before you throw the ball to the other player. The person in the middle starts by throwing the ball to his right or to his left while running forward, if he throws the ball to the left he runs and takes that players spot, now the player with the ball throws it to the player on the right while running and takes his spot on the right, remember not to take more than 2 1/2 steps before throwing the ball, keep weaving and throwing until your at the basket, the player with the ball will shoot a lay in.

Third Basketball Drill for Beginners: THE LAYIN OR LAYUP

To do this drill start on the left or the right of the free throw line, dribble the ball with your strong hand, if your right handed the layup will be on the right side of the basket and if your left handed it will be on the left side of the basket. Dribble the ball and run toward the side of the basket your on and just before you get there stop the dribble take 2 steps and jump off of your opposite foot, if your on the right you will jump off your left foot and on the left you will jump off your right foot, extend your right arm if on the right side with the ball and shoot it off of the backboard into the basket. Do the same thing on the left side but using your left arm to shoot or lay in the ball off the backboard.

You have just got basketball drills for beginners lesson that shows you the basics of basketball, everything you learn in basketball is learned off of these 3 drills and remember to practice. The only way to get really good at something is to keep doing it and do your basketball drills for beginners.
